Huddersfield Broad Canal

Cooper Bridge to Huddersfield - 8th September 2017

Huddersfield Broad Cana

My Dad and I walked approximately 4 miles from Cooper Bridge, near Mirfield, to Huddersfield on the Huddersfield Broad Canal.  Mum opted to clean my oven at the flat as she doesn't like walking in mixed weather like it was on that day.

We parked near Cooper Bridge, near Mirfield, and joined the Huddersfield Broad Canal at the junction.  It was originally known as Sir John Ramsden Canal when first built at the end of the 18th Century.  This wide locks waterway runs parellel with the River Colne up the the university in Huddersfield town centre.

We enjoyed the tranquility of the canal and the undisturbed flora and fauna.  Notable sights were the John Smith football and rugby league stadium, the mechanical Turnbridge Loco Lift Bridge and Aspley Basin.  We loved the historic and industrail buildings dotted along the canal which gave us the imagination about its industrial activity that is happening or happened on the canal.

We finsihed the walk at Aspley Basin and nipped in the Apsley Pub for a drink and comfort stop.  We caught the bus (yes, I remembered my bus pass!) back to Cooper Bridge and Dad's car for our journey home. Next time we will continue our family adventures on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
